Smart Compound Garden

A vertical vegetable garden for family compounds: a wall of soil, planted on both sides, that waters itself with solar power and soil sensors.

What we do

Fresh vegetables are scarce and expensive in many urban compounds, and there is little space to grow them. The Smart Wall grows leafy greens, herbs and chilli on a strip of about 2 m² next to a wall. Sensors measure the soil and a small solar-powered controller decides when to water. The family harvests, weighs the harvest and sends a photo on WhatsApp; our garden assistant replies with simple advice.

Smart Wall

4 × 2 m, planted on both faces, drip lines on top and in the middle of the wall.

Waters itself

Soil sensors and a solar-powered controller. No mains power needed.

WhatsApp assistant

Families send a photo of the harvest and the wall, and get advice in their own language.

Pilot

We are testing the first garden in Lamin, The Gambia, from January to April 2027. We measure the harvest, the water use and the time it takes a family each day.
